Reliable Solutions - Varnish Removal Systems
Lubricant varnish has become a significant maintenance problem in many critical hydraulic and lubrication oil applications, such as gas turbines, paper machines and compressors. Turbine oil varnish has been a particularly high profile issue over the last decade. A very small amount of varnish that settles in a susceptible zone, such as a fuel control or IGV valve, can prevent the system from starting properly, resulting in a fail-to-start condition or in some cases a unit trip. Our Varnish Removal Systems (VRS) were developed to address the need to properly remove varnish (also known as lacquer, sludge, or tar) commonly found in various lubrication and hydraulic systems. Our process utilizes either granular adsorbent media or depth media filter elements to effectively remove dissolved and suspended oil degradation products (i.e. the cause of varnish). Varnish removal is accomplished with oxidatively stable media, engineered to selectively remove only the varnish-causing contaminants without disturbing the oil’s additive package.
High Viscosity Filter Elements to Maintain Oil Cleanliness
Achieving low particle counts of less than 6-micron particles in high viscosity oils can be problematic. Filter elements with enhancing filter element void volume and support were evaluated through lab and field testing. With the enhanced elements, end-users are maintaining cleanliness levels of ISO 16/15/12 on ISO 680 oils.

We quickly hooked up one of our 600 GPM Filter Skids with our 36 kW heater and flushing tank. Within 24 hours, we were able to flush the system and test the oil. Optimal purification cleanliness was achieved, verified by our onsite particle laser counter. We verified all piping was clean and got the system back on-line. The machine has been running with no issues since.
